Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria
LGBTQIA+ History Month Film Screening
101 Carver Hall

Hosted by the Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success

The EMMY award-winning documentary Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria, tells the forgotten story of the first known collective act of militant resistance to the social oppression of queer people in the United States–a 1966 riot at a late night cafeteria in San Francisco, three years before the famous gay riot at New York's Stonewall Inn. The film explores the experiences of those who were involved in the riot and the events leading up to it, specifically, trans women who resisted ongoing discrimination and police harassment. Join us for this FREE screening to learn more about this galvanizing riot at a moment that ushered in the modern LGBTQ rights movement!

Green Dot Action Week Keynote: Ericka Hart
"Where are All the Black People?"
Great Hall, Memorial Union

Green Dot Action Week Speaker

Ericka Hart is an activist and sexuality educator with a Master’s of Education in Human Sexuality from Widener University. She is currently an adjunct at Columbia University’s School of Social Work and has taught sexuality education for elementary aged youth to adults across New York City for 10 years. Diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer at the age of 28, Hart realized that neither her identity as a queer black non-binary femme, nor her sex life as a survivor, was featured prominently in her treatment. She will share her unique perspective on challenging anti-blackness and the importance of addressing sexual expression and human health at their intersections with race, gender, chronic illness and disability.

This lecture is sponsored by: Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success, College of Human Sciences, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Gamma Rho Lambda, Margaret Sloss Women's Center, Multicultural Student Affairs, Recreation Services, Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Society for the Advancement of Gender Equity, Sociology, Student Wellness - Green Dot Action Program, Thielen Student Health Center, Women's & Gender Studies Program, Committee on Lectures (funded by Student Government)
